Exploring the origins of animation movie scores

Hayao Miyazaki’s animation studio has been fascinating international audiences since 1985. More than twenty full-length movies have been released under the direction of its founder, leaving a unique visual and musical imprint in the collective memory: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, The Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro, and The Journey of Chihiro are all successes intrinsically linked to the original music of composer Joe Hisaishi.

These undeniable musical successes are the result of a skilful combination of repertoires, as musicologist Max Dozolme points out: ” His orchestral scores inspired by the impressionist music of Debussy and Ravel are mixed with synthesiser melodies, traditional Japanese songs or light waltzes with Italian accents, as the main theme of The Moving Castle proves.”

Cézame’s Animation Movie Soundtrack

From this perspective, an album project was born: Animation Movie Soundtrack. This album transcribes, “in the manner of”, the emotion of Japanese animated films into original compositions available for synchronisation.

With great refinement, this album revives the major orchestral themes of Japanese anime. Every step in this epic adventure is full of magic: flutes, piano and strings wonder our children’s souls. Was it just a dream? A fairy tale, a chimaera?
