Cine-Retro: Bruno Alexiu x Romy Schneider
Get your fill of French cinema nostalgia with this extract from Serge Bromberg’s documentary L’Enfer d’Henri-Georges Clouzot. These poetic images are taken from the rushes of the film begun by Henri-Georges Clouzot in 1964, accompanied by Bruno Alexiu’s fabulous original music, inspired by the 60s and jazz.
A dramatic shot
First of all, a bit of history: after a difficult shoot (which ended with the director having a heart attack), the film was abandoned. The images from the film, described as magnificent, lay dormant for over fifty years before being unearthed.
The original script is based on a story of jealousy, where the man played by Serge Reggiani is plagued by progressive hallucinations involving his wife, portrayed by Romy Schneider. The production team uses kinetic art, op art and electroacoustic music to represent the husband’s growing madness on screen.
In this extract, you can appreciate Romy Schneider’s captivating, classy performance, as well as the camerawork: truly iconic, and beautifully enhanced by Bruno Alexiu’s original score.
